Our Mission & Values

Our Mission

The Clark Cawthra Coneybeare Foundation exists to improve the quality of life for individuals and families across Toronto and Ontario by funding and delivering programs rooted in education, social equity, and community resilience.

We believe that structural inequality — not individual failing — is the root cause of most human hardship. Our work, therefore, is intentionally systemic: we seek to identify and address the underlying conditions that prevent people from flourishing, not merely alleviate their immediate symptoms.

We operate with a clear commitment to accountability, transparency, and measurable impact. Every dollar we invest in programming is backed by evidence, guided by community voices, and evaluated against concrete outcomes. We are not simply a funding body — we are an active partner in the communities we serve.

Our mission calls us to be courageous in our choices, collaborative in our approach, and consistent in our values. We will always put people first — their dignity, their aspirations, and their right to a life of meaning and opportunity.

The Founding Families

The Clark Cawthra Coneybeare Foundation draws its name — and its spirit — from three prominent Toronto families whose histories of civic engagement and philanthropic leadership stretched across the better part of two centuries.

The Clark family arrived in Upper Canada in the early nineteenth century and built their reputation through contributions to public education and neighbourhood development in what would become the west end of Toronto. Their belief that learning was the foundation of a just society shaped the earliest charitable activities that would eventually coalesce into this Foundation.

The Cawthra family, one of Ontario's most distinguished philanthropic dynasties, contributed significantly to Toronto's cultural and social infrastructure. Their legacy of giving — from hospitals to schools — set a benchmark for responsible stewardship that continues to inspire our governance today.

The Coneybeare family brought deep roots in social welfare work, having been involved in settlement house movements and newcomer support programs in Toronto's west end during the early twentieth century. Their practical, hands-on approach to community service infuses everything we do.

In 2002, descendants and associates of these three families formalized their shared charitable ambitions into the registered entity that exists today. Incorporated under Canadian federal law and granted charitable status, the Clark Cawthra Coneybeare Foundation became a permanent vehicle for intergenerational giving and community investment.

Our Core Values

These four principles are not aspirational slogans — they are operational commitments that shape every decision, every partnership, and every program we undertake.

◆ Integrity

We are transparent about how we use resources, honest about our limitations, and accountable to the communities we serve. We publish our financials, share our evaluation data, and welcome external scrutiny as a mark of organizational health, not vulnerability.

◆ Equity

We actively work to centre the voices and experiences of those most marginalized by systemic inequality. We recognize that equal treatment is not the same as equitable treatment, and we design our programs accordingly — meeting people where they are, not where we expect them to be.

◆ Community

We do not impose solutions from the outside. We build relationships of genuine trust with the neighbourhoods and populations we serve, co-designing initiatives based on local knowledge and lived experience. Our community partners are not recipients of our charity — they are co-creators of our solutions.

◆ Excellence

We hold ourselves to the highest standards of program quality, governance, and professional conduct. We invest in learning — our own and our partners' — because continuous improvement is not optional when the stakes are people's lives. We celebrate achievement without losing sight of who and what still needs our attention.

Our Vision for 2030

By 2030, the Clark Cawthra Coneybeare Foundation is committed to becoming one of Ontario's most impactful community-focused charitable organizations — not by growing for growth's sake, but by deepening our roots and broadening our reach in the communities that need us most.

We are building towards a future in which our Youth Education Bursary program awards over 200 bursaries annually; our Community Wellness Initiatives operate in every ward of the City of Toronto; and our Newcomer Integration Support program has helped more than 5,000 families establish stable, prosperous lives in Ontario.

Underpinning all of this is our commitment to financial sustainability and organizational resilience — ensuring the Foundation can continue its work not just in 2030, but for generations to come, honouring the intent of the founding families and the trust of the communities we serve.
